iPhone Mirroring using the Apple TV

There are times when you want to play your youtube videos on your TV quickly, without having to navigate through your Apple TV menu. The simple way is to use the Airplay button on the youtube menu.

This works well for videos and photos. But what about your music or all your other Apps or Games. Well if you have an iPhone 4S, you are in luck. You can use the mirroring feature to view your screen as it is on the iPhone directly on your TV.

Requirements: iPhone 4S, Apple TV, wireless network on which both the devices are connected. Read the rest of this entry »

Siri in a jiffy

If you have been using the 4S for a while, and especially if you have been using Siri, you know how to invoke it. When the phone is on standby, just press the home button and hold it. Another way is to invoke it from the “microphone key” on the keyboard just to the left of the space button.

But neither of those is the fastest way to talk to her. Lets say you want to do a quick web search for the nearest post office. If you phone is on, (but not in stand by), no matter what application you are in, (even when you are not running any application – like you are on the launch pad or home screen), just lift the phone to your ear and you will hear the familiar ‘ting-ting’ and you can start speaking. This will work even when the phone is locked. The only requirement is that the screen is on.

If your Siri is not set up correctly here is how to do it.

How can I find if the OS on my iPhone is up to date?

Starting with version 5 of iOS, you can easily update the operating system software on the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad wirelessly and over the air. In effect, the umbilical cord has been cut from the PC or Mac.

But older phones such as the iPhone 3G or the original Phone cannot install iOS version 5. For example my 3G phone is up to date at the latest possible version for it – iOS 4.3.1. But on my 4S, the current and updated version is iOS 5.1. So how can I tell if the software is up to date and if I have the latest fixes and patches? Read the rest of this entry »

Yes you can charge your iPhone faster with your iPad charger

How to find the available free space on your iPhone or iPad

You may have come across situations, especially when you are recording long videos when the phone suddenly runs out of storage space. You now have to wait to unload the photos and videos to make room. When you do that, how do you determine how much space you have freed up?

How much more am I really paying for the 4G iPad?

We all know that a 4G model costs $129 extra for the same configuration as a corresponding wifi model. But that is just the beginning. The real cost is the cost of actually using the service. That will add up. And when you start using the hotspot facility the costs will add up. Not to mention the cost of overage. That can come back to haunt you every month!

So what are the real costs? Well it depends on several factors. One of which is whether you use AT&T or Verizon.

How can I change my iTunes ID?

There are several reasons you may want to change your iTunes ID.

Here are some reasons I can think of:

  1. You never signed up for the me.com account when it was not free. Now that iCloud is free, and you got a me.com account, you want that to be your primary login ID or email for iTunes.
  2. You want to use one account for purchasing apps and music that you can share with your family, but you want to keep a separate account for other apps like Calendar, Photos, etc.
  3. Your gmail account was your primary iTunes ID but with their new non-privacy policy, you want out. You no longer want to use google.

Well you are in luck. With the introduction of iCloud last year, Apple made a few changes to the account maintenance web site. Here is how you can easily change your iTunes ID.

How can I create and use shortcuts for phrases I frequently use?

Last week my cousin Georgy told me, “I love my iPhone and all its features, but I miss a feature that I had on my older simpler phones. On them I was able to use shortcuts when I was texting and they would get expanded automatically to the right phrases.”

I’ll take this opportunity to show how you can set up shortcuts on the iPhone, like I showed Georgy. By default the only shortcut is ‘omw’ for ‘on my way’. But you can create shortcuts for just about any phrase you want. The next time you type the short code for the phrase, auto-complete will suggest it to you. And you are on your way.

This is how you set it up.
